Posted in the TournamentIndicatorFourm> So it’s Sunday morning I’m sitting in the library (bathroom) reading a couple of pages of a Christmas present I got from my wife “The Theory of Poker” by David Sklansky. To say this book is dry is like saying the Sahara Desert is wet. Anyway I come across the Fundamental Theorem of Poker in Chapter 3.
He says that since there is a Theorem on Algebra and Calculus, there should be one on Poker so here’s his “ Every time you play a hand differently from the way you would have played it if you could see all your opponents’ cards, then gain and every time you play your hand the same way you would have played it if you could see all their cards they lose. He goes on to say this theorem applies when you are head-sup and nearly always applies to multi-pots.
I'm not an educated person so I looked up Theorem in the dictionary and get this; Theorem:
1. An idea that has been demonstrated as true or is assumed to be so demonstrable.
2. Mathematics A proposition that has been or is to be proved on the basis of explicit assumptions.
something that has been or must be proved to be true by careful reasoning
There’s a saying “if my sister had a di.k, she would be my brother. IMO, his Theorem on Poke is the same. If you could see your opponents cards??? Well you can’t. There is a theory that aces beat 72o about 90% of the time is based on millions of hands.
Here’s my Theorem on “David Sklansky’s Theorem of Poker” His theory is not based on reality so IMO it’s not a theory at all just a statement made for the purpose of filling up his poker book.
His Theorem on Poker puts me in mind of something Doyle Brunson once said. “We’re just a bunch of Poker Players. Some guys think they’re scholars and movie stars” I guess you could add authors to that. Anybody looking to buy this book save your money IMHO.
Yeah the "Theory" has been sort debunked, as it is not really a "theory". An example could be where on takes a pot control line, purposely keeping the villain's range wider. In a sense, we are playing against the theory by not defining the villain's hand range, but it is probably the most +EV line to take in that spot.
